The Importance of Human Resource Functions
There has been a growing awareness for Human Resource Management. This is because more and more organizations are recognizing the importance of its employees. Employers realize that its workforce is the key to its success.
The success of the organization does not only rely on hiring qualified and competent employees. The management should know how to motivate the employees so that they will continue to be productive. The employees have to be happy with their job so that they will not leave the company. Employee satisfaction is very important to retain competent labor force in the organization.
Aside from that, management has to develop programs to provide growth for its employees. Most employees want to hone their skills. If they feel that they cannot grow in the organization, they will seek for companies where they can improve.
These are just some of the HR jobs. Below is a thorough discussion of their functions and importance:
1. Staff recruitment
Recruitment is a very essential step in building your workforce. If you hire the wrong people, it will surely affect the operation of the organization. The theory X and Y of Douglas McGregor is very significant during this step. According to him, there are two types of employees. The X employees are those that dislike work. They need close monitoring to perform well. Supervisors have to threaten them with punishment in order to do better.
The Y employees on the other hand are those who have innate desire to work. They love challenges and finds fulfillment in finishing a job. It takes more that incentives and punishments to motivate these employees. They have the desire for growth and development.
The organization has to be certain that the people they are going to hire have a personality that will fit the post. If the organization is going to employ someone whose character does not fit the position, the employee will not be productive.
2. Motivating the employees
As mentioned earlier, HR manager jobs do not only focus on staffing. They also have to pay attention to employee motivation. Even the best employees need encouragement to perform better.
The management has to continue to motivate its employees because of the stress and pressure in the workplace. Apart from that, there are also several factors affecting the environment in the workplace. The employees may enjoy working with their co-workers but they may not be happy with the nature of their jobs.
Some enjoy their jobs but they are not satisfied with their pay. The management has to keep a balance between these factors. They have to address their needs while weighing what privileges and benefits should be given to them.
Management has to identify these factors and develop programs that will address this. Motivation keeps the employees going. Without it, they will no longer find reason to go to work.
3. Ensuring job satisfaction
Another important function of the HRM is ensuring job satisfaction among all levels of employment. Job satisfaction is the level of contentment an employee has with his job. Consequently, if an employee’s level of satisfaction is high, he will perform better and stay with the company longer. However, if an employee is dissatisfied, he will not be motivated to give his best and will to stay with the organization. The challenge to keep the employees satisfied is among the HR director jobs. They have to continue to evaluate the level of satisfaction of their employees and apply those suitable for the organization.
One can relate job satisfaction with the theory of Abraham Maslow, which is about the Hierarch of Needs. Maslow has provided a model that depicts stages of human needs. There are five stages, which are physiological, safety, belongingness, esteem, and self-actualization, respectively.
Individuals have to satisfy the needs of the lower level first before satisfying those in the higher levels. For most employees, they seek for employment because they want to provide food, clothing, and shelter. After meeting those needs, they want to be safe from any threats. They also want to feel loved and accepted. When those are met, they seek another form of gratification. They seek for promotion and recognition. Ultimately, they want to feel fulfilled and have a sense of purpose.
Although the hierarchy may not be true to everyone, it shows how the standard of employees for job satisfaction evolves. This shows that the factors affecting job satisfaction depends on the needs of the employees.
4. Enhancing the skills of the employees
Although HR assistant jobs do not include training the employees, their role is vital in making trainings and seminars happen. They assist in conducting surveys on what training would best fit the employees. They also prepare the materials needed for the training. Their team is essential to the success of any HR event.
Growth and improvement is part of self-actualization. This is also part of what motivates and what keeps individuals satisfied. Although there are people, those in theory X, who find contentment in doing the same thing over and over again, there are those that want to become the best that they can be.
Employers should also give their employees room to grow. Promotion and additional responsibilities can boost the morale of employees who want to elevate their status.
5. Addressing the needs of the employees
It is also the role of the HRM department to address the needs of its employees. If they are not performing well, the HR should look into the reason why. It could be because they have an unhealthy relationship with their immediate supervisors. It could also be because of the working environment.
Employees have various needs, these include their defined role in the organization, working equipments, and the way to handle stress and pressure. Although it is important that the payroll supervisor jobs be done, it is also essential to know and address the other needs of the employees.
HRM functions are necessary because the organization has to attend to the needs of its human resource.
